My Stepper is Smarter Than Your Servo PDF Print E-mail

As Rodney Dangerfield would say, stepper motors get no respect. Traditionally, stepper motors have been somewhat "dumb" - that is, they were not able to do what their smarter cousin, the servo, could - things like stall detection and prevention, coordinate tracking and position maintenance, and high velocities. Thankfully, that is no longer the case. Thanks to the innovative folks over at Applied Motion Products, stepper motors are now far more capable than they ever have been - and the best part is, they cost a fraction of a servo.

Our new STM series of stepper motors with integrated drives and optional encoders is indeed quite smart - position maintenance, programmability, anti-resonance, stall detection, and stall prevention represent a fraction of their capabilities. To illustrate this, we put together a video of the STM Series' stall prevention and detection capabilities, so you could see for yourself.

Interested in what anti-resonance is and how it can save you money by allowing you to run steppers where servos have been the traditional solution? Check out this article.

Leuze Logo

Paul Davis Automation is proud to be representing Leuze Electronic in Southern Ohio, Kentucky, and Western Pennsylvania! Leuze continues our long history of representing safety and sensor equipment, and we are very excited to be representing a company with such a stellar reputation. Leuze is a family-owned multinational company based out of Germany. Their US operations are headquartered in New Hudson, Michigan.

Leuze has been manufacturing sensors and safety equipment for over 40 years. We assemble our light curtains at our facility in Michigan, and often times, orders can be turned around in one day! Our most popular light curtain, the COMPACTplus, comes with a built-in safety controller and has 4 safety-related switching outputs (OSSDs). Our pricing is very competitive, and our 24-hour repair service and customer service are absolutely top-notch.

Our sensor solutions are similarly impressive, with best-of-class transparency detection, and even white-on-black and black-on-black detection thanks to our background-suppression technology. For ranging applications, we offer a full-line of distance measuring sensors with ranges out to 200m with an accuracy of 2mm with a reproduction accuracy of 0.3mm. All of our sensors are stocked at our New Hudson, MI facility, and can ship in one day.

Our demo kit is quite impressive, and we are able to demonstrate the technologies that set us apart from the competition. Contact us for a free demo and consultation!

Leoni Logo

Leoni is perhaps one of the best-kept secrets in industrial multiconductor cable in North America. Based in Germany, Leoni is a €5 billion/year company specializing in high-flex industrial multiconductor cable. Our largest customers are BMW, Audi, Porsche, and Airbus, and we have brand labeled for many of the other big names in the industry.

Our production unit in Ontario has produced over 22,000 unique designs. We treat every cable order as custom, but our minimum is only 100 meters and our delivery is on-par with most stock-cable houses at 3-6 weeks. While we don't necessarily have "standard" items, our quick manufacturing process erases the distinction between custom and stock.

In other words, we focus on designing the right cable for your application, not what we can sell you out of our catalog.

Applied Motion Products, our stepper/servo motor & drive product line, has some pretty neat tricks up their sleeve. The demo kits with which we have been provided use the STM series motor with integrated drive (as pictured):

STM Stepper Motor with Integrated Drive

AMP has very good proprietary anti-resonance control. So good, in fact, that I decided to shoot a video of it and put it on YouTube. Check it out! If you don't know what resonance is in the context of stepper drives, go ahead and watch - the video does explain the concept.

There are several other neat features that I plan to highlight in the near future. If you just can't wait, and would like to see the demo in person, don't hesitate to contact us

Applied Motion Products

Paul Davis Automation is proud to announce that we are now representing Applied Motion Products in Northern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania!

Applied Motion Products (AMP) is based in sunny Watsonvile, California (dangerously close to the laid-back surf empire of Santa Cruz). Their story is an interesting one - their roots start back in 1978 as a stepper motor supplier for the hard disk drive industry in Silicon Valley. Back when hard drives were five times the size of the laptop on which I am typing this article. Needless to say, they did very well, and the knowledge they gained about manufacturing high-precision drives and motors has made their venture into the industrial world quite successful.

AMP has since grown out of the hard drive business and is now a leading manufacturer of servo drives and motors, stepper drives and motors, position controllers, integrated software, and precision gearheads.

You can read more about them at their website. If you would like to check out some of their products click the image below. Stay tuned - AMP has some exciting products, and we will be highlighting them here in the near future. As always, contact us for more information!
