SMS, or Short Message Service, is not just for teenagers with over-developed thumbs. In 2008, over 70 billion text messages were sent per month in the US alone, and over $81 billion dollars are spent per year on text messaging. Text messages are used for everything from banking alerts to Ebay auction alerts.
But what do they have to do with industry? The crafty people at Switzerland-based Comat have devised a way to integrate SMS with remote monitoring and control. Their SMS Relay (data sheet) allows you to remote control your panel, PLC, equipment, or anything else you can hook to its 4 outputs (or monitor with its 6 inputs) remotely from your cell phone. No more dialers or cable runs. The SMS Relay is extremely configurable via a PC and the associated free software. Our applications range from turning on generators, to shutting down rental equipment that is overdue.
