We've started to hear chatter about gas to electric furnace conversions. With the price of fossil fuels poised only to increase, and looming cap and trade legislation, electric heating is sounding more attractive to many of our customers. Kanthal has put together quite a nice case study video on an Aluminum holding furnace that was converted from gas to electric using Kanthal APM Tubes and Tubothal heating elements.
The best part is, the payback for the capital investment was only 3 months for the customer.

We are now archiving our email newsletters on our website. If you click on the "Contact Us" link on the left menu, a sub-menu will appear that once clicked, will give access to our email newsletter archive.
We were able to archive our emails that were sent in 2009, but unfortunately, do not have access to emails from earlier dates. If for some odd reason you saved our old emailings (2008 and prior) please forward them our way!
Not all Globars are created equal, and innovation is certainly not dead with this tried-and-true electric heating source. For decades, Kanthal has been manufacturing high-quality Silicon Carbide heating elements. We have set the bar (no pun intended) for performance and reliability, and our reputation has allowed us to grow and continue innovating with product that out-performs our competition's products in nearly every regard.
The latest addition to our SiC family is the Globar AS (click for data sheet). Kanthal's Globar AS was designed to be interchangeable with the majority of standard products on the market, so no changes in either the equipment or the power supply are required.
There are several key advantages to the Globar AS:
Improved strength - Globar AS is stronger than any competitive material on the market, thus allowing longer, lighter, and more efficient elements to be manufactured.
Resistivity to chemical attack - Globar AS material has a more closed pore structure than many alternative products, limiting the penetration of surface contaminants into the material structure. If your current elements have the "glazed donut" look, the Globar AS will fix that problem and extend your element life significantly by limiting penetration of contaminants.
Improved life in cyclic operation - Most SiC elements are designed to deliver optimum performance when used continuously. Based on tests with 100 hours at full-power followed by a return to room temperature, Globar AS returned over 40% more cycles than the best competitor's element, and 150% more than the worst element tested.
Long-span elements - Globar AS can be built with up to a 3500mm hot zone.
Consistency of material properties - The Weibull modulus is a measure of the repeatability of mechanical properties in brittle materials. The Weibull modulus of Globar AS material has been measured as 14, compared with typical values of <10 for most SiC heating elements.
If you are currently using our Globar SD, or I2R's Starbar, you are a candidate for upgrade to Globar AS. Since the introduction of the Globar AS, we have had significant success helping existing customers save money by using less elements and extending their maintenance cycles.
